According to the Central Intelligence Agency's World Fact Book, it was only in 1840 that Antarctica was determined as a continent instead of just a group of islands. The South Pole is located in Antarctica, which is generally considered as the world's coldest, driest, and windiest continent.Among the noted early explorers of Antarctica was Ernest Shackleton, who ventured to the icy continent on his ship Endurance in the first decades of the 1900s.
Activities in Antarctica are governed by the Antarctic Treaty which prohibits military actions, mining, and nuclear explosions, and promotes scientific research.
