Where the Pacific Ocean and the China Sea meet, the islands of Batanes stand in proud, secluded splendor. The Batanes islands, the Philippines' northernmost province, are nestled between Taiwan and the Babuyan islands of Cagayan province off Luzon island. The main islands include Batan (where the provincial capital Basco is located), Itbayat, and Sabtang.
Nature has been both a foe and ally for Batanes. The seasonal typhoons may sometimes bring damage. Yet because of the relative "secrecy" alluded to Batanes, the scenic yet delicate ecosystem has been largely preserved.
Specific spots in the Batanes islands are under consideration or pending potential recognition as another UNESCO World Heritage site in the Philippines. With its virgin and picturesque landscapes and its people and culture, a Batanes island tour will produce memories likely to be recalled with fondness.
