Recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Living Cultural Landscape, the rice terraces of the Cordilleras in northern Philippines are marked by "amphitheater-like" form and practically vertical terrace ponds. The rice terraces of Batad and adjoining Banaue are considered engineering marvels as these were developed by ingenious farmers long time ago and without the help of modern machinery. This is a recent picture of this wonder by a young Fil-American student (EI) who spent part of the summer of 2007 in a University of the Philippines-organized cultural awareness educational program.
