Lake Superior is the largest of North America's 5 Great Lakes - the others being Michigan, Erie, Huron, and Ontario - which together form the world's largest aggrupation of freshwater lakes.
The Great Lakes are sometimes referred to as inland seas and as the "Third Coast" of Canada and the US.
Also found on the environs of Lake Superior are some of America's national treasures, including the Apostle Islands and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
