Winsome Charm of the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts
Nestled in the Berkshire mountains of western Massachusetts, just off Interstate-90 (I-90) or the Mass Turnpike, is the trendy region of the same name - the Berkshires - which includes the towns of Stockbridge, Pittsfield, Lenox, Lee, Great Barrington, and Houstanonic.
The summer of 2009 afforded an opportunity for our family to explore this wonderful vacation spot and it was indeed a pleasant surprise to be enthralled by the compelling tourist destinations and places of interest, all of which combine to make the Berkshires justifiably America's premier cultura resort.
Among these is the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, which was established in the area where Norman Rockwell produced his masterpieces. Norman Rockwell was the famed American illustrator who depicted seemingly trivial subjects or topics into classic works of art via sketches and paintings in the time when the printed medium (eg, Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, Life, and other magazines) reigned among the preferred, if not leading, vehicles of disseminating information. Even now in the time of Photoshop and other digital image-enhancing softwares, one can but be impressed by the quality and warmth of the works of the talented man that was Norman Rockwell.
As all vacations go, there is an end to the visit, but the vistas of inspiration that we saw in the Berkshires will continue to linger on in our memories and motivate us to reach higher and farther.
